1. Apple Watch Series 6
Key Features
- Cellular capability
- Integrated GPS
- Display that never Sleeps
- With ECG and SPO2
- Emergency SOS
While the Apple Watch remains one of the standout wearables you can buy, we’re still waiting for another leap forwards in functionality and, perhaps, design too.
Apple Watches are rising in popularity to the point where most will know that they’re small second screens that connect your iPhone to your wearable, and you might be wondering whether the new device offers anything massively alluring;
If you’re thinking about upgrading from an older model you’ll be especially keen to learn what’s new here.
Design and Build Quality
In terms of design, the new Apple Watch Series 6 looks more or less identical to the Apple Watch Series 5. The build quality of the Apple Watch Series 6 is fantastic, especially the stainless steel version.
The right side of the watch has the digital crown and a single button just below it. There’s a cutout for a speaker on the left, and the health sensors are on the underside of the case.
The Apple Watch 6 is also 5ATM certified, which means it can be used for swimming and pop down to a depth of 50m for 10 minutes if you so wish – but, in reality, it means that the Apple Watch is fully protected against ‘normal’ swimming.
The Watch 6 is lightweight too – at 36.5 grams (for the 44mm edition)
As ever, you’re able to customize your Watch with different bands, and the new addition in 2020 is the Solo Loop, an (expensive) band that doesn’t have a buckle or velcro to clasp it together, and which is instead made of stretchy silicone or braided silicone that you pull over your hand onto your wrist.
Display
The OLED display on the Apple Watch Series 6 is one of the best you’ll come across on a smartwatch. It measures about 1.73 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 368×448 pixels on the 44mm case models.
Apple also uses a sapphire crystal glass cover on the stainless steel variants, and the brightness of the always-on display is now 500nits, compared to 200nits on the Series 5. The watch itself weighs 47.1g and is waterproof up to 50m, so you can swim with it.
A quick press of the crown takes you to your app drawer, and you can rotate it to perform various functions such as zooming in/out and scrolling through menus.
Speaking of the always-on display, the Series 6 actually lets you interact with notifications, device controls, and complications in the wrist-down state without the need to turn on the entire display.
Essentially, it’s now much easier to interact with your watch if you want discreetly check the time or your notifications.
Software and Performance
The Apple Watch Series 6 introduced Apple’s brand new S6 SiP. Apple claims it has been completely redesigned to make the most of the space inside the watch and is up to 20 percent faster and more energy-efficient compared to last year’s S5 chip.
The Series 6 also gets 5GHz Wi-Fi band support and Apple’s U1 ultra-wideband positioning chip which enables tasks such as keyless entry and ignition in supported cars.
The Apple Watch Series 6 still only works with an iPhone, so you’ll need an iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14.
Navigating watchOS 7 on the Apple Watch Series 6 is speedy and a relatively lag-free experience, something that Apple has always had an upper hand in compared to platforms such as Google’s Wear OS.
Touch response is very good and the haptic feedback for incoming calls, alarms, and reminders from apps such as the Breath app is very satisfying and unobtrusive.
Health and Fitness
The Apple Watch Series 6 will automatically log activities such as walking, cycling, running, etc, and you can set goals and begin workouts manually in the dedicated watch app.
Other health features from previous generations are present too, such as menstrual cycle tracking, ECG measurement, and environmental noise level tracking.
The Apple Watch Series 6 is no replacement for a dedicated pulse oximeter, but the average readings I’ve gotten over the past few months have at least been way better than what the Galaxy Watch 3 managed.
The best part of having this feature is that the Apple Watch Series 6 will automatically take periodic readings during the day and when you sleep, so this isn’t something you need to remember to do.
The Apple Watch Series 6 also has built-in sleep tracking, which is linked to the Bedtime feature in the Clock app. The app tracks your average time in bed and average sleep time measures your heart rate and presents this data as a bar graph, broken up by week or month.
Miscellaneous
The selection of apps available for the Apple Watch is unparalleled. Just about every major iOS app you’d think would make a great smartwatch app is probably available. This is the Achilles heel of many smartwatch platforms and Apple excels in this area.
Another new feature in watchOS 7 is hand wash tracking, which automatically starts a 20s countdown when it detects that you’re washing your hands.
The Health app shows your average time spent washing your hands and the number of washes done in a day, so you can take steps to improve your habits.
Apple has also done away with overly smoothing GPS tracks as it did with previous Apple Watches. This means your GPS data will look a little less pretty, but it’ll be more visually accurate now.
The Series 6 also has an always-on altimeter to track elevation throughout the day. That means your daily floor climbed metrics should be more accurate compared to previous Apple Watches.
Siri has recently been updated to include on-device dictation. It now dictates speech on the watch itself instead of sending the data to Apple servers first.
Battery Life
Apple promises up to 18 hours of battery life on one charge, and the Series 6 is said to be able to charge quicker than the Series 5. Without the always-on display, I was getting close to two full days on one charge, but when it was enabled, I was just about able to cross one full day.
The Watch 6 also charges much faster than previous models – in a side-by-side comparison with the Watch SE, from 0% the Watch 6 was fully charged in 75 minutes, while the Watch SE, with the older S5 chip, took 100 minutes to fill up.
And don’t forget: there’s no charging block in the box anymore (but you do get a charging cable). You also get an alert on your iPhone now when your watch’s battery is fully charged, which is a clever touch.
Verdict
Apple has unsurprisingly cemented itself at the top of the smartwatch market with the Apple Watch Series 6. It’s simply the best you can buy.
If you know you’re going to hold onto it for a few years, you should always go for the most modern version of whatever Apple thing you’re going to buy – it’ll be supported for longer with updates, it’ll offer longer battery life, and it’ll offer the widest range of features.
Upgrading from Series 5 to the Series 6 doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, and if you were thinking of doing this just for the blood oxygen monitoring, I’d suggest saving your money and buying an actual pulse oximeter instead.
Pros
- Excellent build quality
- Useful health monitoring tools
- Great display, touch response
- Reliable fitness tracking
- Decent battery life
- Accurate, reliable GPS
- Unmatched app support
Cons
- Sleep tracking is too basic
- No third-party watch faces
2. Samsung Galaxy Watch 3
Key Features
- Rotating bezel
- 8GB internal memory
- Display that never Sleeps
- With ECG and HRM
- Cellular compatibility
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 offers one of the best smartwatch experiences on the market, with a dazzling design and top-end spec that allows it to run as smoothly as any other wearable on the market.
Design and Build Quality
Samsung slimmed down the Galaxy Watch 3 and now it is 8% smaller, 14% thinner, and 15% lighter than the first Galaxy Watch.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is offered in two sizes – a 41mm being the smaller option and a 45mm model for those who prefer a larger watch on their wrist.
Galaxy watch 3 also comes with a fun bezel like the trademark Galaxy Watch, the dial works well with both side buttons and offers a great alternative to swiping or trying to poke at the circular display with our finger.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 holds its own as a stylish accessory and it comes with genuine leather straps that match the casing’s color and contribute a more elevated aesthetic compared to the fitness-focused Samsung Galaxy Watch 2.
The straps can be interchanged as per your needs as they come in pretty standard sizes. The 45mm is compatible with all 22mm straps, and the 41mm device is designed for use with 20mm straps.
Display
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 uses a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a 360×360 resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass DX for scratch protection. The display is excellent, with good brightness, punchy colors, and sharp text.
The rotating bezel is a very intuitive way of navigating through the menu and screens. It might sound unnecessary, but for a watch with a tiny display that can easily get covered by even a finger, this is definitely the way to go.
To the right of the smartwatch, you get two buttons. The bottom one acts as a power button and is also customizable to perform tasks for long press and double click. It also acts as a home button.
The button at the top is a back button. For navigating throughout the UI, you will have to use the rotating bezel, button, and touch screen. All of which works flawlessly.
Software and Performance
The Galaxy Watch 3 is powered by Exynos 9110 chipset. The same chipset is also featured on the original Galaxy Watch from Samsung, which may disappoint some.
The touch response, animations, and overall look of the software skin are slick and it feels faster than most of the Wear OS watches I’ve used.
The chipset is loaded with 1GB of RAM as compared to 1.5GB RAM on the LTE version of the original Galaxy Watch which is pretty odd. However, the watch performance is optimized very well and it is top-notch and we had no issues or whatsoever.
All variants of the watch come with 8GB of storage, and we found the OS and pre-loaded apps were already using 3.59GB of this space, so if you want to fill your watch up with apps and music you’ll have around 4GB to use.
Health and Fitness
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is loaded with fitness tracking features, similar to what the Galaxy Watch Active 2 offers. The Galaxy Watch 3 can automatically detect up to six activities and begin logging data such as heart rate, steps taken, etc, without needing any user intervention.
When I tested the device, it managed to log a fairly accurate step count and distance on evening walks, even down to the number of floors I climbed. When counting 500 steps manually, the Galaxy Watch 3 was quite accurate, only missing a few strides on average.
The Samsung Health app on the watch also lets you measure your stress and keep track of the calories in the food you’re consuming as well as your water intake. There’s also a women’s health feature for keeping track of menstrual cycles.
You can use the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 to track sleep. Samsung has partnered with the National Sleep Foundation to better understand readings taken by the watch. It tracks various aspects of your sleep such as REM cycles, awake time, deep sleep, and light sleep.
The other highlight feature is blood oxygen monitoring. The Galaxy Watch 3 tries to check SpO2 levels through your wrist, the results are not highly accurate when it is compared with pulse oxymeters, but it does a decent job in that aspect.
Miscellaneous
The Galaxy watch 3 casing is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance, and also boasts of military-grade durability with a MIL-STD-810G certification and the rotating bezel is like a stylus to your smartwatch but more useful.
There’s Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi n, built-in GPS, NFC, and sensors such as an accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, and heart rate sensor.
The watch features an advance notification system and you can easily reply to incoming notifications from most apps such as Gmail, WhatsApp, Slack, etc, which is nice considering there are no native Samsung smartwatch apps for any of these.
The Galaxy Watch 3 interface is beautiful and you can pick from over 80,000 watch faces and over 40 compilations which are basically widgets for your watch.
You get options like Always-on, DND, Power, Settings, Sleep mode, volume, water lock option, Bluetooth, flashlight, find my phone, and brightness.
The watch also comes with a built-in speaker and microphone. When connected to your phone, you will be able to pick and respond to calls via your watch itself.
Battery Life
The Galaxy Watch 3’s 340 mAh battery is rated for 2 days. That’s fair for smartwatch standards (the Apple Watch 5 only gets 18 hours) and likely contributes to the slimmed-down design.
However, if you enable the always-on display setting, the battery life will drop to 24 hours. Still, this is better than Apple Watch 5. Although turning on the battery saver takes off most of the smart features and gives you only a phone and SMS app to play with but it offers 18 hrs of extra juice.
Charging the Galaxy Watch 3 is a bit of a pain, only because it takes well over two hours to charge fully. The watch itself is rated to charge at just 5W, which leaves no chance for improvement using a faster wireless charger.
The Galaxy Watch 3 can be charged with its proprietary charge or via wireless power share with a compatible Samsung phone.
Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is an excellent smartwatch if you’re an Android user, and builds upon the success of the original. The slimmer and lighter design and the vast assortment of fitness and health features make it a very good all-around smartwatch.
In addition to using the Galaxy Watch as a general watch and to manage notifications, the smartwatch also offers a bunch of health features like heart rate monitor, automatic workouts, sleep tracking, stress monitor, and even SPo2 monitor.
Pros
- Traditional watch design, superb build quality
- Crisp AMOLED display
- Assorted fitness features
- The rotating bezel is intuitive
- FDA-approved ECG readings
Cons
- Slow charging
- Limited third-party app support
3. Apple Watch SE
Key Features
- Cellular
- Amazing display
- Lag-free OS
- A plethora of app support
- Accurate fitness tracking
The Apple SE Watch has got all the useful features of the Watch 6, but it’s much cheaper, and thus one of the best smartwatches around.
The always-on display is sorely missing, but the fitness tracking – including motivating nudges to keep you active – is as good as ever, and will improve when Fitness Plus lands.
Design and Build Quality
The design of the Apple Watch has more or less remained the same since the very first model. The casing is made of aluminum and there are three color options – Space Grey, Silver, and Gold – but no other materials or finishes.
The aluminum case feels premium. It has a digital crown and a button on the right side. The ‘taptic engine’ vibration simulates mechanical feedback when the crown is rotated, which is satisfying.
The button below the digital crown wakes the screen and lets you launch apps. On the left, you’ll find cutouts for the speaker, while the heart-rate sensor is on the underside.
Apple released an all-new style of the band, the Solo Loop, which looks like a really neat addition. It’s a silicone (or braided silicon) loop that stretches over your hand, so you don’t need to constantly buckle and unbuckle your Watch SE to put it on and take it off.
Display
Apple Watch SE comes with an OLED display that can produce fantastic blacks which makes it very hard to distinguish the bezels from the display while using the watch.
It has a Retina LTPO OLED display with a peak brightness of 1000nits which makes content visible even in direct sunlight. There is Ion-X strengthened glass on top which should keep the display from picking up scratches.
For those who loved the idea of the always-on display of the Watch 5 or Watch 6, that’s the big thing that’s missing on the Watch SE.
The outdoor brightness is comparable to that of the Watch 6, so there’s no issue with trying to see the time when you’re blinded by the rays of Helios, and it doesn’t glow like a beacon at night.
There’s also a multitasker key that you can use to switch between apps. The bottom is made of ceramic and aluminum, holding the optical sensor for reading heart rate.
Software and Performance
Apple gave the SE its S5 SiP processor, which has a 64-bit, dual-core engine. It’s paired with 32GB of storage, which is more than enough for some music files. Other hardware features include the W3 chip for pairing with AirPods, an always-on altimeter, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and compass.
Apple Watches can only be paired with iPhones and no other Apple devices, forget Android smartphones. The UI on the Apple Watch SE is a little different from WearOS but is very easy to navigate.
The Apple Watch SE is quick to wake when you raise your wrist. You can summon Siri by the usual “Hey Siri” phrase, or raise the Watch SE to your face and speak the command.
The Watch SE has the same tight integration with an iPhone as other Apple Watches, for notifications, Apple Pay, and a relatively healthy selection of third-party apps, including Strava, Google Maps, and a basic version of Spotify.
Health and Fitness
The Apple Watch is known for its fitness tracking abilities. It can detect when you begin working out and suggests tracking the exercise for you.
The Apple Watch SE isn’t capable of blood oxygen monitoring like the Series 6, and also misses out on the ECG sensor that the Series 4 and Series 5 had.
However, it has heart rate monitoring, fall detection, noise monitoring, steps, and general activity tracking, plus workouts ranging from running, cycling, and swimming to core training, yoga, and a huge list of others.
Sleep tracking records the time you were sleep and can set a standard alarm, but cannot measure your sleep cycle and has none of the smart alarm functions that competitors have, which wake you up in a light sleep phase so you feel refreshed.
Miscellaneous
The Watch SE comes with the handwashing tracking, which is genuinely smart and useful, employing on-device AI to detect when you are washing your hands using your motions and the sounds of water and soap, and automatically timing you 20 seconds and logging it in the Health app.
Apple has an entire app store just for its smartwatches, and developers have actually filled it with wrist-sized versions of their smartphone apps.
Apple stuffed a plethora of its own apps aboard the watch, too. Smartwatch essentials, such as calendar, messaging, stopwatch, and compass are aboard, as are nice-to-haves such as the camera shutter release, Apple Maps, and Apple’s Memoji app.
Battery Life
Battery life is very good, lasting a total of 49 hours on between charges. That includes sleep tracking overnight, which consumed 12% of the battery in eight hours, and a 25-minute run that consumed 5%.
The watch fully charges in 1 hour 52 minutes from flat using the magnetic charging cable and a standard 2A USB power adapter, which is just under 30 minutes longer than the Series 6 and about the same as the Series 5.
The Watch SE uses 100% recycled aluminum in its case. It does not ship with a power adapter in the box, but the wireless charging puck has a USB-A connector for plugging into standard USB power adapters.
Verdict
The Apple Watch SE is a fine wearable. It excels at most of the functions like it has got excellent notifications, pin-sharp haptics, snappy performance, and good battery life. The health monitoring features are excellent and it has solid exercise tracking too.
It also lacks some serious features, such as advanced sleep-tracking and the electrocardiogram and blood oxygen sensors of the Series 6.
The Watch SE is effectively a hybrid of the Watch 4 and Watch 5, which effectively makes it 1.5 generations old. If you love having every cutting-edge feature, this isn’t for you.
Pros
- Crisp display
- Accurate fitness tracking
- Good build quality
- Decent battery life
- Plentiful features
Cons
- No ECG and SPO2
- Limited sleep tracking
4. FOSSIL GEN 5 GARRETT
Fossil is one of the last remaining watchmakers to stay committed to Google’s Wear OS platform.
The company launches multiple smartwatches each year, and they’re some of the best-looking Wear OS watches in the business.
The company launches multiple smartwatches each year, and they’re some of the best-looking Wear OS watches in the business.
Design and Build Quality
The Fossil Gen 5 is a good-looking watch in its own right, with various colors, finishes, and straps available. It doesn’t immediately scream that it’s a piece of technology.
It is a watch made by a watchmaker; its attractive design is sure to impress everyone around.
Display
The Fossil Gen 5 Garett features similar overall design to previous Fossil watches, with a big, bright 1.28-inch OLED display with a resolution of 416 x 416 pixels
A sharp pixel density of 328ppi, and three programmable pushers on the right side — the middle of which is a rotatable crown.
The buttons are easy to press, and the spinning crown provides a nice alternative to swiping on that tiny screen with your finger. It’s no rotating bezel like you’ll find on the Samsung Galaxy Watch, but still, it does the job perfectly.
Features
The Fossil watch comes with NFC for Google Pay contactless payments, as well as built-in GPS, and an optical heart rate sensor.
This smartwatch can track all your day-to-day activities and keep you physically fit.
The fitness crowd will also be happy to hear that the smartwatch has a 3ATM water-resistance rating, as well as an altimeter, accelerometer, and a gyroscope built-in.
You can also play music through the watch’s speaker, surprisingly its quite loud and clear.
Performance
This Smartwatch comes with the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip, which isn’t all that new, but at least it isn’t the old-as-hell chip Mobvoi is still using.
That buttery smoothness is helped along by 1GB of RAM, nearly double what other Wear OS watches offer. Fossil also included a full 8GB of onboard storage.
Wear OS has improved over the last year but simply isn’t as feature-complete or as slick as Apple’s watch OS or Samsung’s Tizen on their respective watches.
Battery Life
The Fossil Gen 5 uses a fairly standard battery, but it squeezes out extra life thanks to its numerous battery saving modes.
The Gen 5 manages to banish the issues of poor performance and battery life of Wear OS to the past.
There’s still a magnetic charging disc, but the magnets are much stronger and Snap-On with a decent amount of force.
With the combination of actual contact and a decent magnet, the watch doesn’t need lining up – it just snaps easily into place and charges much more quickly than before.
Verdict
Fossil Gen 5 is one of the best smartwatch options the platform currently has to offer. It has a great design, quality display, and all of the features you could ask for.
Fossil nailed the hardware with this watch. Now let’s hope Google puts as much effort into Wear OS.
If you want a good-looking smartwatch that doesn’t follow the crowd and ticks enough boxes to be a replacement for a traditional digital or analog timepiece, then the Fossil Gen 5 is the go-to smartwatch option.
Pros
- Snappy, smooth performance
- Sleek looks
- Built-in NFC and GPS
- Customizable battery modes
- Built-in speaker is very useful
Cons
- A bit heavy
- Fitness features need expansion
5. Apple Watch Series 5
Key Features
- Cellular capability
- Integrated GPS
- Display that never Sleeps
- Swim proof
- Emergency SOS
The Apple Watch Series 5 isn’t a major upgrade, but it’s packed with useful features and is still the best smartwatch you can buy.
Design and Build Quality
The Apple Watch Series 5 is another step of Apple’s persistent pace at the head of the smartwatch pack. The new model takes everything that made the Apple Watch Series 4 so good, sprinkles on a few extra features, and then replaces the previous model with this superior one.
The Apple Watch hasn’t seen a major redesign. The Series 5 looks identical to the Series 4 in every single way, that’s no surprise – the Series 4 was a drastic redesign that brought bigger screens than previous models, in a thinner body.
You’re getting the same curved aluminum frame around the outside, a square display, and the Digital Crown, a button you can twiddle or press to scroll through menus or access other functions on the side.
The design has quickly become iconic, fusing the bright and colorful OLED display with the shiny frame and this year, ceramic and titanium options will be added to the mix if you fancy paying a little more for a premium finish.
Performance
Apple Watch 5 is powered by the all-new 64-bit dual-core S5 processor, which makes it a chunk faster than its predecessor.
The fitness capabilities of the Watch 5 haven’t been improved, but it’s still a terrific health tracker! the heart rate monitor is accurate, an ECG feature offers further heart health monitoring, and the onboard GPS is pretty accurate.
You can swim, do high-intensity interval training, cycling, and even practice yoga with the Watch 5 to fill up those all-important rings that monitor your daily active performance.
Display
This smartwatch from Apple has a slightly larger 1.78-inch, 368 x 448-pixel LTPO OLED display which has a pixel density of 326 ppi. The display’s ambient light sensor can detect how bright your environment is and adjust itself accordingly, so the display is never too bright or too dark.
Apple talked up the new low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology used in the Apple Watch 5 as the reason it could make the device run for longer.
The use of LTPO means one thing: the Apple Watch 5 can go from a fast, 60Hz refresh rate down to just 1Hz within a second, which helps in the functioning of lightening quick always-on display feature.
Miscellaneous
The Apple Watch 5 comes with 32GB of internal storage compared with 16GB in its previous generation. One of Apple’s tweaks in the new iPhone is an extra Bluetooth antenna for improved range and the wireless energy efficiency being 50% better than its predecessor.
The main new feature for health-watching is noise detection. If you’re in an environment that exceeds 90 decibels, you’ll get a notification warning of that fact, with a note saying what length of exposure at that level will cause hearing loss.
Elsewhere, watch OS 6 adds warnings about irregular heart rhythm taken from the optical heart rate sensor – meaning you don’t need an ECG to detect it anymore.
The Apple Series 4’s other major health innovation, fall detection is here again. If you have a rough tumble, your Watch will ask if you’re okay via a notification. If you don’t respond, it will call the emergency services, and ping a message to your emergency contact.
Battery Life and Software
The Apple Watch Series 5’s always-on display doesn’t seem to be much of a battery drain. Apple claims an 18-hour battery life, which is effectively a day of use before sleep, this assumes a mid-level use case of doing some working out and GPS usage (which are big power drainers).
A 285 mAh Li-ion battery powers the smartwatch that lasts up to 2.5 days of continuous usage on a single charge mostly using it for notifications and bit of Siri here and there.
The smartwatch runs on Apple’s latest Watch OS 6 with more features like cycle tracking, noise level alerts, and activity trends among them. The other most useful new features are: new watch faces, improved Siri capabilities, and some new apps.
Verdict
Simply put, the Apple Smartwatch Series 5 is the best smartwatch you can buy right now. Click here to check the price.
Since its second generation, the Apple Watch has been the best smartwatch in India, the screen being on all the time that was the last piece in the Apple Watch puzzle after five generations Apple has finally nailed it.
The design, build quality, and the grade of features that are built into this device is probably the best in class.
Pros
- Excellent haptics
- Always-on display
- Great health and activity tracking
- Robust build quality
Cons
- The battery isn’t the best
- No SPO2 tracking
6. Oppo Watch
The Oppo Watch is one of the best Wear OS smartwatches money can buy. While that isn’t a particularly laudable achievement, its craftsmanship and hardware-software synergy are commendable.
It does ape the Apple Watch’s design, but there’s a lot to like here in terms of its impressive display and fitness modes.
Design and Build Quality
The Oppo Watch looks every bit like an Apple Watch. The similarities extend to the body, straps, and fascia as well. To the untrained eye, the slightly more curved display might not be unnoticeable.
The Oppo Watch is almost as sleek and strong as Apple’s wearable. It doesn’t seem fragile from any side, and all the curves meet seamlessly.
Unlike the Apple Watch, there’s no Digital Crown to speak of, with interaction made primarily via the touchscreen, as well as the two hardware keys on the casing’s right side: a home button and a multifunction button.
The construction of the rear panel is mostly plastic, though the central sensor module is made of ceramic. The smaller 41mm model swaps out the ceramic sensor hub for plastic.
The Fluororubber band has ample holes to cover wrists of all sizes. It is very similar to the Apple Watch silicone strap with just a bit more rigidity. That hardness also makes it a little more difficult to put on, especially as you approach the holes closer to the chassis.
Display
The AMOLED construction of the panel also adds another level of immersion as the sides fade away in the frame with no discernible edge or bezel. The colors are vibrant and punchy and stand out beautifully amid the inky black background.
The display has a resolution of 402 x 476 (326ppi) which is one of the highest on any wearable. Text and icons were adequately sharp and clear and you will not be able to see the individual pixels at standard viewing distances.
The brightness can also be adjusted either manually and automatically and there are five stages of brightness to choose from. For our use, which is predominantly indoors at the moment, even the second level was adequate. We didn’t find outdoor legibility to be an issue, either.
Software and Performance
For an operating system that primarily depends on swipes from the sides, there’s probably no other smartwatch that feels as well-designed as Oppo’s.
Oppo uses a dual-chip system — the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 for the complete functionality and an Ambiq Apollo 3 chipset for the battery saver mode.
By design, Wear OS is notorious for being heavy on the RAM than on the chipset. Thankfully, the Oppo Watch ships with an entire 1GB of it. The combination makes operations extremely smooth and responsive, which is still a rare feat for Wear OS watches.
You also get the staple Wear OS gestures to navigate through pages. A flick in either direction can scroll up or down and a shake to go back to the home screen.
There’s also an option in the companion app for the watch face to be automatically matched with your attire if you submit a picture. It doesn’t always work but it looks cool.
Health and Fitness
Oppo includes its own watch-based fitness tracking app that can track five different types of exercises, including swimming.
The Watch does a decent job of step and distance tracking. If you set the watch to track you while walking outdoors, it latches onto a GPS signal very quickly.
Heart rate tracking on the Oppo Watch was fairly accurate and it was in the same range as reported by the Mi Watch Revolve. Sleep tracking was accurate and the Oppo Watch did give me a breakdown of time spent in deep sleep, in light sleep, and awake.
You can only see this breakup on the watch, but Oppo recommends downloading its HeyTap app to sync heart rate and sleep data.
While app compatibility famously isn’t great on Wear OS, there are a handful of third-party fitness apps like Strava, the Adidas running app which can also be downloaded and make use of the Oppo Watch’s hardware.
Miscellaneous
Oppo’s pre-loaded apps are good enough to get you started but are a bit short on features.
Other pre-loaded apps include a timer, clock, and stopwatch. You’ll also find apps for breathing exercises as well as guided workouts.
Google Assistant is also around to quickly look up information or launch apps. You also get media controls as soon as any music or video is played on the phone. You can control the playback, skip tracks and even control the volume.
The speaker is a valuable addition for when you need to interact with Google Assistant quickly.
Battery Life
You can enable the power saver mode to extend battery life, but that means the Oppo Watch offers limited functionality. Step tracking and heart rate tracking work, and of course it displays the time, but you can’t log workouts, run any apps, or even see notifications.
The Oppo Watch comes with a magnetic charging cradle, and charges quickly, and charging the Oppo Watch isn’t much of an issue.
It snaps onto the charging cradle easily. The watch got to 43 percent in 15 minutes, and 89 percent in 30 minutes. It took 42 minutes to charge completely.
Oppo’s Watch VOOC Flash Charging means that even the larger battery in the 46mm model can be replenished in just over an hour.
Verdict
For Oppo’s first attempt at a smartwatch, It’s clear that the company clearly wanted to make an Apple Watch equivalent for its own smartphones and in that it has clearly succeeded, even if its approach lacks originality.
Moving to Wear OS is a double-edged sword but with the capable hardware at play, what the Oppo Watch delivers doesn’t feel like a second-class user experience when placed against the competition.

Design and Build Quality

The strap itself is made of silicone, and it’s a 22mm interchangeable strap design, so you can swap it out for a different one. The silicone strap that’s included in the box is comfortable both for day-to-day wear and exercising.

Mobvoi has engineered S2 to meet military toughness specifications, giving it a MIL-STD 810G rating against temperature, dust ingress, and water resistance to 5 ATM.
Display
The watch has a bright and clear display with strong viewing angles, so you can easily take a quick peek at the time when you need it. The smartwatch features a 1.39-inch OLED display with a resolution of 400 x 400 pixels.
Viewing angles are great and the “always-on” feature means you’ll never have a black screen without destroying your battery life.
There’s no ambient light sensor, which will force you to adjust the brightness manually.
Features
The TicWatch S2 is running Wear OS 2.2 along with Mobvoi’s custom fitness tracking apps, called TicHealth and Tic Motion.
The smartwatch also works seamlessly with Fit and Fit Workout apps that are designed by Google.
The tough body makes the TicWatch S2 ideal for outdoor use. It tracks steps and heart rate, interacts with Google Fit and Mobvoi’s TicHealth app, and has built-in GPS.
The overall accuracy of the GPS and HR sensors might be just fine for a casual fitness user, but if you’re a data geek this shouldn’t be your primary training tool.
One of the more interesting features in TicMotion is its ability to detect swim strokes precisely, along with this, there is an accelerometer, gyroscope, and proximity sensors on this device which opens up a whole range of possibilities for enhanced usability.
You’re also missing out on NFC, so you won’t be able to use Google Pay to make payments from the smartwatch.

Charging is completed using a magnetic plinth with pogo pins on it. The magnetic pin connector at the back easily mates with the charging clip and starts charging effortlessly, with quick charge support, this device gets charged from empty to 100% within an hour.
Verdict
The TicWatch S2 doesn’t offer every high-end feature you can get on a smartwatch today, but it offers a lot of what you’d expect it to in a good-looking package.
It’s hard to find a smartwatch this cheap, and if you do, you’re unlikely to find such an attractive design or such a full feature set.
The lack of NFC stings, but the S2 makes up for it with a robust design and that highly desirable MIL-STD rating. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better option if you’re looking for an ultra-durable, Wear OS-powered fitness smartwatch on a budget.
If you want a premium smartwatch running on Android wear OS but has a budget under Rs.20,000, you should get the Mobvoi Ticwatch S2 without any second thoughts.

Fitbit’s latest smartwatch, the Fitbit Versa 2, sports several new features, including Amazon’s voice assistant and a premium subscription service aimed at making it easier for you to reach your goals.
The Versa 2 is squarely aimed at users keen on fitness rather than those seeking productivity from a wearable, making it an extension of Fitbit’s excellent fitness tracker range, but one that comes with some extra perks.

Verdict
The Fitbit Versa 2 looks nice, feels great to wear, and has a strong companion app. These are all good features to have, but the lack of in-built GPS limits its utility a lot.
